There is no doubt about it - YouTube has completely changed the way in which we interact. Since the video sharing channel launched in 2005, it has gone from strength to strength. With over 2 billion views a day and the average person spending 15 minutes a day on the site, it's hardly surprising that businesses across the globe are jumping at the chance to have their own YouTube channel. It’s also the second largest search engine after Google.
Like most social networking sites it’s completely free so you won’t have to worry about it eating into your budget and racking up expenses.
It’s also extremely accessible. How often do you see someone in the street or on the bus showing their friends a YouTube video on their phone?
Videos are constantly shared through Facebook and Twitter as the links can be easily copy and pasted into the browser taking the viewer straight to the video with one click.
Set your goals
In the same way that you would approach anything in your business, you need to set yourself some goals. The slight difference in this case is that you are able to be a little more flexible and experimental. Your YouTube channel can be changed and updated easily allowing you to do this. In the early stages of creation, you’ll still be establishing what works and what doesn’t. It’s only once you have tried a few ideas out that you’ll be able to set some defined goals and begin to work on attracting a dedicated following and audience.
Always keep your company brand in mind, remember what you represent and also what you are trying to gain from your YouTube channel. Use this as a basis to determine what videos you want to upload.
Make time
Although it’s very easy to upload videos onto your YouTube channel, you’ll want to invest some time into your venture. Set aside allocated time to work on your YouTube channel so you can focus and channel your energies into making the best videos for your page. It should not be something that is rushed or done in your lunch hour.
Content
Think about keywords you want to include in your title and description. As YouTube is based on searching and browsing, your keywords could come up in search results. This means more people will be looking at your videos.
Your video could also feature as related videos from other videos with similar keywords. Coming up as a related video is a great way of getting people to click on your link.
It’s great to have company commercials and any existing videos you’ve made on your YouTube channel. This will automatically brand your channel and tell your viewers more about your company.
However, it’s vital that you have a variety of material on your channel which will captivate a wider audience. People aren’t going to be interested if you only have company videos on your channel. They need something extra - something that they can share. Videos have the potential to go viral which could prove extremely powerful for your company. This is the part where you’ll have to think outside the box. Don’t be scared to try something new and it doesn’t have to be directly related to your company.
Take a look at Old Spice’s YouTube channel. They have managed to create a whole brand with their use of videos. Although this is an extreme example it just goes to show the power YouTube can have for your company and how creative you can get.
Visuals
Make your YouTube channel page attractive and appealing. You should put your company logo on your page to create brand awareness. Try using similar colours to those on your website so that your subscribers can make the connection.
You should view your YouTube channel page as a profile page for your company boasting to your viewer what your company is about and showing the dynamic and interactive nature of your business.
Set everything out clearly with clear links to your website and social networks. Once you have a number of videos uploaded you can create playlists making it easier for your viewer to access your videos.
Interact
It’s so important to interact with subscribers and other YouTube channels. You can ‘like’ and ‘favourite’ channels while commenting on any videos that interest you.
Using call to actions are also a good idea to get your viewer to interact with your videos. It could be something simple like asking them to ‘like’ the video or you could ask them to rate it, comment and share. This will gently prompt them to take action especially if it’s as simple as clicking a single button.
Expand and grow
Your YouTube channel is unlikely to become an instant hit overnight with only a few videos uploaded. It will take time to get your channel established and create the YouTube page you want. As you start to connect with more people through YouTube and upload more content the word will spread and you’ll start to see results.
Plan ahead
As the internet and YouTube continues to expand, it’s worth keeping an eye on trends and changes taking place. If you see that certain types of videos are popular then jump on the bandwagon and make one yourself. Always plan ideas for your next video so that there is not large gaps in between uploads. Consistency and quality is key to a great YouTube channel.
