How to create an online survey

By Alex Woods on December 15, 2011

There may be many reasons why you want to start an online survey. They’re a great way to generate feedback and provide your business with some insightful and useful information.

Surveys serve as a powerful tool reaching a large group of individuals and can be shared easily with others. The results you collate will enable you to gain a greater understanding of your consumer’s needs and general thoughts. This, in turn, will allow you to make improvements and changes to your company which will only lead to success. The brilliant thing about online surveys is that they are normally cost-effective and easy to create.

Questions

First things first – You need to determine what exactly it is that you want to find out.  Your goals and outcomes should be clearly demonstrated right from the start as this will help you to compile your list of questions.

When assembling your list of questions you’ll need to ask yourself if they are going to help you find out what you need to know. How relevant are they? How useful will the answers be? They need to be direct, concise and very much to the point.

Make your questions as simple as possible and avoid using lengthy words. Ensure you don’t end up trying to ask more than one question at once. This will only prove confusing and could affect the outcome of your results. Your questions should be easy to process so that your participant can answer them immediately and not feel daunted by the rest of the questions ahead of them. The questions should be non-biased and not intended to sway the participant in any way in order to gain fair and even answers.

The timescale of your questions need to be considered as well. You want to keep them quite present so that the participant doesn’t have to try and think too far back into the past or too far forward into the future.

Format

Depending on what exactly you want to gain from your survey, you’ll need to think about how to format your questions. You could choose to display them as multiple choice or maybe you want written answers. A lot of surveys will use a scale of opinions. For example, the participant will have the choice of answering Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly Disagree. This is a great way for the participants to express their opinions without having to think too much. A ‘Don’t Know’ or ‘Not Sure’ option is also advisable as some people may find certain questions difficult to answer and you don’t want this to deter them.

Once you’ve determined how many questions you’re going to ask, you’ll get a better idea of how long the survey will take. You should inform the participant at the beginning of the survey the approximate time it should take to answer all the questions. Although you want it to be detailed to get all the information you need, refrain from making it too long or the participant is more likely to leave your survey incomplete. Make your questions flow and progress them along the way. This will help direct your participant’s train of thought and enable them to think more accurately.

Audience

Consider your audience. Will they be able to answer the questions truthfully while relating it to themselves?  For example, it’s no use asking a group of middle aged men what they think about the best beauty treatments. Writing for your audience means adjusting your language so that they are able to relate to your questions easily.

You should allow the participant some privacy as not everyone will want their opinions to be shared. You can offer the participant the option to remain anonymous which will put them more at ease when completing your survey.

Creating the survey

There are many online tools which will help you along the way. Sites such as Survey Monkey allow you to create a survey without having to download any software. Surveys can be created quickly and easily with many survey options available to choose from. They’ll provide you with a survey link which can be distributed across e-mails, through advertising and social media networks. They’ll also help you to collect your responses for you. Reports will then be conducted and can be viewed through graphs, charts and data. The basic features are free but for more advanced settings you’ll need to pay a small monthly fee.

Getting your survey out there

Letting your current consumers know in advance that you’re launching a survey is a great way to generate interest before it is even published. You can promote it on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other  social networking sites. A lot of companies will offer a prize for a winner chosen from the participants. This is a clever way to encourage people to get involved as they will feel like they have a chance of being rewarded.

Setting a timeframe for how long you’ll have your survey published is a good idea so that you can let people know how long they have left to complete it. The start and finish dates should be clearly defined so that you get as many participants as possible.
