Everywhere you look these days, people are glued to their mobile phones. With the impressive developments of the smartphone over the past few years, everyone now has the chance to check e-mails, view websites and interact via social media through one small handheld device.
A lot of businesses have taken this as a great opportunity to target their audience through mobile marketing.
Here are some effective ways to target your consumers:
Making your website mobile-friendly is crucial if you want to be successful in mobile marketing. There are simple ways you can do this and the first thing you should note is to avoid using Flash. If you have a Flash site, it will not function on a mobile handset. You’ll want your website to be compatible on iPhone, Android and Blackberry models so it’s important to determine how well your site works on each of these devices.
Building your website in HTML is your best bet when it comes to making an accessible and easy to navigate mobile site.
You’ll need to consider factors such as how your website will be used on a touchscreen phone, how much content is realistically able to be viewed on a small screen, loading time and how easy it is to navigate around the site. A lot of websites will have a mobile version of their website especially created so that users are able to select this option when browsing on their phones. These can be specifically designed for mobiles without having to interfere with your online website.
This works in a very similar way to an e-mail mailing list. Instead of using e-mail addresses to contact your customers and clients, you can use their mobile phone numbers. There are many advantages to this direct approach of contacting your consumer. You can collect their numbers by requesting their number through sign-up details on your website.
Obviously, you are limited with a text message in terms of aesthetic function and the amount of data you are able to include. This means your content has to be concise, relevant and delivers your message effectively.
You’ll also need to think about the approach you take when addressing your consumer. There is more leeway within e-mails to spam, promote and sell. With text messaging, you’ll need to take a more personal and sincere approach due to the private and direct nature of the form of contact.
A sense of immediacy is one of the many benefits of using SMS for your mailing list. People are more likely to open up a text message on their phone immediately than an e-mail. It is estimated that a marketing e-mail is opened 6 hours after being sent whereas a text message is read within 4 minutes of being sent. There is also a significance in open rate as the majority of marketing e-mails are not even read where as more than 95% of text messages are opened by the receiver. *
Sign up rates are also likely to be higher due to the accessible nature of text messaging. It’s much easier to hit reply on a text message to sign up than it is to open up an e-mail, go through links and log in.

This is a great way of collecting phone numbers and building a loyal clientele through SMS messaging. You’ll need to set-up an auto-respond function on your text messages. Once you have this in place you are free to set up your mobile promotion.
A good way of doing this is to place advertisements around the web, in print or even in TV and radio. The advertisement could consist of a code which the consumer will be prompted to text to your mobile number. Once they have texted this code, the automated device on your mobile will send them a text message back with how to take advantage of the offer whether by directing them to your site or providing a promotional voucher code. While all this is being processed, you are collecting a list of valuable contact numbers which you can use again in the future.
A QR code (Quick Response Code) can prove extremely useful for mobile phone users. More and more businesses are using the two-dimensional barcodes on their websites and advertising campaigns. Most smartphone users are able to use the camera function on their phone to scan the code where information will be sent to their device. The information could be a link to your website, product information, promotion details, event details, coupons and links to social media sites and Youtube. The great thing about QR codes is that a lot of information can be contained within the code including links and text, making it really easy for larger quantities of information to be transmitted through one simple code. This is a fast and interactive way of delivering information to your user with speed.
