If you have a Twitter account then you’ll know the importance of making those 140 characters count.
Micro blogging is more popular than ever and allows businesses to engage on a more personal level with their followers.
You’ll be surprised at what you can achieve on a word limit. With the ever-growing nature of Twitter, it’s important to keep on top of your account and ensure you’re making the most of the powerful social media tool.
Bio
Your bio section on your Twitter Profile is important so that users can gain an understanding of what your company is about. This will make your profile look professional and trustworthy as well as instantly provide information about your company. Keep it short and sweet, clearly outlining what your business does. Try to keep it as original as you can and don’t be scared to put a little personality across. Although don’t go to the other extreme and try and make your company sound too ‘wacky’. Avoid using too much business jargon as it can prove off-putting and could make your profile look unapproachable. You could add a link to your website or blog in this section.
Tweets
Trends are big on Twitter so it’s worth seeing what is trending and what everybody is tweeting about before you launch your own. Although a tweet is only short, they still require a bit of thought before you put it out there for all your followers to see. There would be nothing more embarrassing than putting out a poorly constructed tweet or self- indulgent rant. If you have done this before then use it as a useful learning curve. Try and write for individuals and be specific to really target your niche. This will generate quality responses and interest.
You’ll need to reach out to your followers on a personal level as much as a business one. Make them interesting, engaging and likely to spark a response. It should also be something that people want to share. The opportunities are all there as it is so easy to retweet.
You could try sharing links to useful content. People always appreciate something that they can benefit from. Use Bitly or TinyURL to shorten links making it easy to share.
Interaction
As well as sending out your own tweets, it’s important to interact and engage with what your followers are tweeting. If they have mentioned you then retweet them and thank them for any positive feedback. Try and do this within an hour of their initial tweet. It’s important to make each follower feel valued. This will help contribute to your online presence on Twitter and gain a more established following.
Set up searches within your Twitter account that are relevant to your business. This enables you to see all discussions on Twitter which are related to your search making it easier for you to target accounts.
Build on your following
Even if you have thousands of followers, they will prove useless if they’re not interested in your business or brand. There are tools you can use such as Followerwonk and Wefollow to find people in your area who are potentially interested in your business. Once you’ve started to build a relevant and useful following you can interact with them on a more targeted level.
Time management
You don’t want to spend too much of your time on Twitter. Although your tweets require careful thought, they should be quick to churn out. This comes with careful planning and strategizing. Have a rough plan of the sort of things you want to tweet up to 2 weeks in advance. They should be timed with marketing campaigns and your tweets should fall in nicely with the day-to-day running of your business. For example, if you know you have an event coming up in the next week it would be wise to plan future tweets around it.
It’s a good idea to tweet at similar times each day so that you can get into a routine and set aside allocated time to work on your tweets. There are tools which you can purchase to help you with this. Hootsuite is a great tool as not only does it allow you to time your tweets but also enables you to see what people are saying about you and track results. This proves to be a useful aid when managing your Twitter account.
