The slow death of mobile Flash

By Alex Woods on November 30, 2011

It was recently announced that Adobe would be pulling the plug on development of its Flash Mobile Player and focusing its efforts on HTML5 development.

Slow, unreliable and supported only on certain mobile devices, it’s finally lights out for the controversial mobile plug-in.  It has been a long time coming.

Apple have long been opposed to using mobile Flash.  In 2007, Apple released the hotly anticipated iPhone without any Flash capability.

This was followed by the launch of their equally sought after iPad in 2010.  Apple criticised mobile Flash for its flaws in security, high level of battery drainage and woeful user experience.  With so many people continuing to purchase iPhones and iPads globally, it was inevitable that Flash had seen its brightest days.

Following in the footsteps of Apple, it was also announced that Microsoft

would not be supporting mobile Flash in the tablet interface of their upcoming Windows 8 browser.  With both Apple and Microsoft opting out, Adobe have made a wise decision in reevaluating the strength and merit of continuing with mobile Flash development.

So why is HTML 5 so much better than Flash?  HTML5 enables mobile browsers to do pretty much the same things as Flash does and it does

not rely on installing a proprietary Adobe plug-in for your mobile browser.

Flash websites can only viewed on mobile devices that support Flash.

If your website is developed in Flash, 250 million iPhone, IPod Touch and

iPad users are unable to view your website.  Talk about missing a huge

market!  HTML5 is supported by all mobile browsers and is non-proprietary.

As Adobe adopts HTML5 as the mobile web standard and abandons Flash, more people than ever will be able to see great content on their mobiles.

So what do you think about this farewell to mobile Flash?  Was there life still left in Adobe’s Flash Mobile Player?  What do you think this suggests about the future of Flash on desktop PCs?
