Q&A with Kelly Dillet, Marketing Manager

Continuing our ‘Meet the Team’ series, this month we caught up with Kelly Dillet, our lovely Marketing Manager, to find out all about her time at BaseKit, her views on the importance of women in tech and her love of European city breaks!
How long have you been at BaseKit?

Just over 5 years! I’ve moved around the teams a little so it definitely doesn’t feel that long!
I joined BaseKit as a community administrator, helping to build a community of developers who could build their own templates with BaseKit. I then moved on to working with Gordon Plant on the product team, focusing on Product Marketing – ensuring our partners had a great set of marketing materials and support when selling the BaseKit product. I still do that now, but I head up the marketing team as a whole – it’s nice to take everything I’ve learnt and work across all the teams at BaseKit.

We spoke to Marti and Laura recently about being a woman in tech – how has this been for you since joining the industry?

It wasn’t really until I started to attend industry events and product launches that I realised how big the diversity issue really was. However, a lot has changed since I started working in tech – we are seeing more and more women entering – and thriving within – the tech industry. As a tech company in a UK tech hub we’re part of the movement to encourage more women to join our team or younger generations to get involved in the tech industry. Gender balance is important in any company, and it shouldn’t be any different in tech!

What does an average day in the office look like for you?

BaseKit offers flexible hours, so I take full advantage of that and arrive in the office around 9:30-10am, missing all the 8/9am rush hour traffic! I always grab a coffee and catch up with my team in the kitchen, then scan my meetings calendar and inbox. Just checking my calendar and looking at emails normally plans my day for me and there’s usually nothing typical or average about it (in a good way!).

Every day is totally different depending on what’s happening around the company, what partners are up to, and what campaigns we’re running.

I usually have a million tabs open on my screen that consist of different analytics tools to check, articles to read, and materials I’m creating. I try to jump into the tasks with the highest priority and collaborate with multiple teams to action them.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Getting results! I love working hard and seeing results. I get a lot of satisfaction from the impact of marketing and from seeing customers enjoying our product. My mind is constantly on analytics and working towards ways in which we can improve everything our team produces. I probably sound like a massive marketing nerd… but it’s true!

What’s your favourite thing about BaseKit?

The people! We have a really lovely, talented team. BaseKit’s roots have kept us very humble and having our founder, Simon Best, as our CEO keeps us close to our mission. Our relaxed and friendly atmosphere provides a great social environment as well as a productive space for team collaboration.

What’s been your highlight since joining the company?

Such a tough one to answer – there have been a few!! Every individual product launch has been an incredible experience, from ecommerce (one of the very first product launches I was involved in), to BaseKit 10, our latest sitebuilder – each one comes with its own set of challenges, which encourage the team to collaborate in different ways.

When you’re not at work, what do you get up to?

I love looking at holidays and figuring out where my next destination is going to be. I love jumping on a plane (although I’m scared of flying), chasing the sun and heading to a new location – I’m a total sucker for a European city break. When I’m not soaking up the culture in another city I’m usually enjoying beautiful Bristol with family and friends or my insanely adorable (I’m totally biased), scruffy dog!

If you weren’t a marketing manager, what would you be?

I would love to work with animals; big or small, scary or fluffy – I love them all!
