World Mental Health Day 2023 – our mental health journey in 12 months
Every year, on October 10th, the world unites to observe Mental Health Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting well-being for all.
As we mark this significant day in 2023, BaseKit takes a moment to reflect on its journey over the past 12 months. We’re excited to share the remarkable progress we’ve made in fostering open conversations about mental health and establishing effective support systems for those in need.
All of our efforts are part of a plan, actioned by our Mental Health group (pictured above). Together, we work hard to ensure everyone has a voice and the opportunity to give their own thoughts and advice to the wider BaseKit team.
Introducing Spill
Recognising that the majority of our work is conducted remotely, we made the decision to implement Spill, an employee mental health support tool. This innovative platform enables our team to access immediate assistance from fully qualified counsellors and therapists, completely free of charge, whenever they need it.
Additionally, every Monday, we engage our team with a quick check-in through the Spill app. This helps us to understand everyone’s moods and identify potential struggles that may require support. Team members are asked to rate their mood on a scale from stormy weather to full sunshine and share the emotions they’re experiencing at that moment.
While we respect the confidentiality of these check-ins, we also encourage open sharing of feelings to initiate meaningful conversations and raise awareness of the importance of seeking help when needed.
Meet Our Wellbeing Champion
In 2023, following her completion of a Workplace Wellbeing course in the autumn of 2022 with Rener Wellbeing, we proudly introduce our new Wellbeing Champion, Rae! Rae’s profound passion for sports and the positive impact it has on mental health inspired her to help our BaseKit team experience the same benefits.
With guidance from Rener, Rae developed a comprehensive strategy for 2023 to enhance the overall well-being of our team. Rae states,
“With great power comes great responsibility, and being the BaseKit Wellbeing Champion isn’t easy. It can be challenging at times. However, there have been standout moments, such as introducing football coaching for the Ladies of BK, promoting the use of the Headspace app, organising a group charity cycle ride, and most recently, launching the BaseKit Autumn Challenge. In just a short time since its inception in early October, this challenge has garnered over 20% participation from our team, embarking on a 10-week physical activity journey!”
Rae’s initiative has undeniably sparked a positive movement within the team, emphasising BaseKit’s commitment to encouraging everyone to stay active and take part in activities that improve physical and mental wellbeing.
Mental Health First Aiders
We understand that getting outside and engaging in physical activity isn’t always feasible for everyone, especially when facing mental health challenges. Over the past 12 months, six members of the BaseKit team have embarked on a journey to become Mental Health First Aiders, with the primary objective of providing support to every member of our BaseKit family, regardless of their emotional state.
The two day St John Ambulance Mental Health First Aid course has equipped our team with the confidence to identify signs and respond effectively to mental health needs.
We reached out to some of our team members to understand their motivations for taking part in this course:
“The tech industry has a reputation for pushing people beyond their limits. At a previous employer, I was drowning in work-related stress. A colleague reached out and helped me find the support I needed, setting me on the path to recovery. I’ll never forget that conversation, and I wanted the ability to ‘pay it forward’—though I hope I never need to!”
“I wanted to provide extra support to anyone struggling with their mental health. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to deal with anxiety and depression, so I want to be there for others.”
“My own battles with mental health haven’t been easy, and I understand the difficulty of seeking help. So, I wanted to learn how to spot signs of change in others, so I can reach out to them.”
We recognise that the journey toward positive mental health can be difficult. However, as a united team, we believe we are well-equipped to assist those in need and are committed to continually expanding our knowledge of mental health.
Stay tuned to discover what the next 12 months hold for BaseKit’s ongoing mental health journey.
