Significant Carbon Footprint Reductions Highlight BaseKit’s Commitment to Sustainability

As a B Corp company, we aim to continually embrace our force for good mission and responsibility to impact people and the environment positively. Partnering with Green Small Business, we’re delighted to announce we’ve made significant strides in reducing our carbon footprint over the past three years.
Between 2021 and 2023, we achieved a 70% reduction in Scope 1 emissions, a significant decrease in carbon intensity, and a noteworthy cut in Scope 3 emissions related to purchased goods and services.
Partnering with Green Small Business
Every step towards sustainability counts, so we partnered with Green Small Business to meticulously measure and reduce our carbon footprint.
Green Small Business offers tailored solutions for companies like BaseKit, ensuring we minimise our environmental impact. Through their carbon calculator, we’ve tracked our emissions and implemented strategies that have led to significant reductions.
BaseKit HR Director Wendy Weston says:
“It’s important that our daily operations contribute positively to the environment, and the carbon footprint report from Green Small Business helps us measure that impact accurately. As a team, we’re deeply committed to sustainability, and the insights from this report reflect our values.”
Scope 1 Reduction in Emissions Between 2021-2023
Over the past three years, one of our most important achievements has been the drastic reduction in Scope 1 emissions. Scope 1 emissions from direct sources such as company-owned vehicles or heating were reduced from 1.6 tonnes of CO2e in 2021 to just 0.5 tonnes in 2023.
This nearly 70% reduction is a testament to several new green-focused company policies we’ve implemented. These include moving to a more energy-efficient office and adopting electric vehicles for company use.
Carbon intensity reduction
Carbon intensity, which measures the amount of CO2e emitted per million pounds of turnover, is another area where we’ve seen improvement. From 69.7 tonnes CO2e per £m in 2021, we’ve reduced this figure to 48.4 tonnes CO2e per £m in 2023.
This is a 44% decrease since 2021, underscoring our ability to grow the business while reducing our carbon footprint. The reduction in carbon intensity is particularly significant as it indicates that our growth is not coming at the expense of the environment.
Scope 3 Purchased Goods and Services Reduction in CO2e Tonnes
We’ve also seen a reduction in Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from sources like purchased goods and services. Emissions related to purchased goods and services have been reduced from 125.4 tonnes CO2e in 2021 to 94.09 tonnes in 2023.
This 25% reduction is particularly significant because Scope 3 emissions are often the most challenging to reduce, given that they involve factors outside the direct control of BaseKit. We’ve been able to do this by carefully choosing local suppliers whose values align with ours.
Simon Best, BaseKit CEO says:
“The reductions we’ve achieved across all scopes of our emissions are a direct result of our team’s hard work and the environmental action plan we’ve developed. I’m thrilled with our progress, and these results motivate us to continue pushing for even greater reductions in the future.”
2024 and beyond
While we’re pleased with the progress we’ve made over the last three years, we recognise that we need to continually work on our responsibility to carefully manage our impact on the environment.
