Meet Robert, PHP Developer

This week, we welcome PHP Developer Robert Ko Ko Ye to Team BaseKit. Robert joins our development team, helping us continue to build and improve the BaseKit platform.

We spoke with Robert about his journey into software development, what attracted him to BaseKit, how he’s finding remote working and his passion for exploring both above and below the water.

Welcome to BaseKit, Robert! Tell us a little about your experience?

I completed my HND in Software Engineering in 2012, followed by a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from Middlesex University in 2013.

I started my career as a Junior Developer in 2013 and have since built up my experience as a PHP Developer, working across a variety of projects and codebases. My main focus has been backend development with PHP, alongside frameworks, databases, APIs and other web technologies.

I’m really happy to have joined BaseKit and I’m looking forward to learning more about the codebase and the team, as well as contributing to the projects we’re working on.

What most attracted you to join the BaseKit team?

The work-life balance and flexible approach to remote working really stood out to me. I also looked at BaseKit’s Glassdoor reviews before joining and got a really positive impression of the company and its culture.

The role itself was a great match for my experience and skill set, so it felt like a great opportunity to join a team where I could contribute while continuing to learn and grow.

What does your new role involve?

My role involves PHP development and contributing to new features and improvements across the BaseKit platform.

I’m currently working on a new feature around store and booking settings during the onboarding process. It’s been a great opportunity to get familiar with the codebase and development process while contributing to something new.

I’ve also had a really warm welcome from the team. Everyone has been incredibly helpful and supportive whenever I’ve had questions.

How are you finding remote working with the BaseKit team?

So far, so good! I’ve found it really easy to settle into the team. Everyone has been welcoming, friendly and supportive, which has made working remotely really comfortable.

Communication within the team is great, and I always feel like I can reach out to someone if I have a question or need some help.

How would you describe the developer team culture?

I’d describe the developer team as friendly, supportive and collaborative. Everyone is happy to share their knowledge and help when needed, which makes it easy to ask questions and learn from each other.

I’ve really enjoyed the positive and welcoming culture so far.

What are your main goals for working at BaseKit?

My first goal is to become more familiar with the BaseKit codebase and develop a deeper understanding of how the different parts of the platform work together.

I’m particularly interested in developing my knowledge of caching, especially Redis, as well as learning more about the architecture of our internal APIs and how we approach integrations with partner APIs.

Most of all, I’m looking forward to contributing to new features, taking on new challenges and continuing to grow my skills as part of the team.

Since joining the team, what’s been your favourite thing about BaseKit?

The remote working and flexibility around working hours have been my favourite things so far. They give me a great work-life balance while still allowing me to stay connected and collaborate effectively with the rest of the team.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I really enjoy travelling and exploring different parts of the world. I’m also passionate about scuba diving.

I’m an Advanced Open Water Diver and have experience diving to around 100 feet (30 metres). I really enjoy getting the opportunity to explore underwater environments – it’s a very different kind of adventure!

If you’d like to join the team and work with BKHQ, we’d love to hear from you.
