At BaseKit we are continually evolving and improving our platform to meet the on-going needs of our partners and their entrepreneurial customers the world over. In Spring each year we unveil our product roadmap for the year ahead.
We recently caught up with BaseKit VP of Product, Gordon Plant to discuss product development prioritisation, learnings from partners and the core themes for our 2023 roadmap.
When planning what to prioritise for product development, what processes and resources do we undertake to forge the roadmap ahead?
“The BaseKit management team has a strategic plan that gives us our overall vision for the next three years. This gives us a broad framework for developing a product roadmap. We then refine through ongoing discussions with partners to ensure our product development goals are aligned with the needs of our business and theirs.”
“Once we have some candidate ideas, we work through the technical and commercial implications. This involves working right across the business and ensuring everyone has a clear understanding of the potential impact on our product portfolio, resources, and customers. This lets us select the ideas we believe will deliver real value to our partners and customers.”
What have been the biggest learnings from partners when it comes to plans for their customers in the year ahead?
“We’ve learned that it’s very important our partners can fully integrate our products with their marketing, cross-sell and up-sell campaigns. Some kinds of customer activity in our products can offer very useful indicators of where the customer is on their business creation journey. This allows the possibility of much better targeting and personalization of the campaigns.”
“As partners continue to expand their product offerings, signposting and clear communication of how our products fit into their overall strategy is crucial to success.”
What have been our biggest learnings from customer research and usability testing when it comes to what small business owners need in 2023?
“Keep it simple! There really is no such thing as ‘too simple’ when it comes to small business owners’ needs in 2023. Our customers are very busy people and they want a streamlined and intuitive experience that can help them achieve their goals quickly and easily.”
“This may seem obvious, but it’s easy to lose sight of this as we add new capabilities. Our customers use our products as tools to get their work done, not as things to tinker with or explore. They need our products to join up with their existing workflows and seamlessly integrate into their daily routines.”
Thanks for your time Gordon.
The core themes of the 2023 BaseKit roadmap
So without further ado, we’re pleased to announce that our core themes for 2023 are Activation, Connection and Value.
Activation
We are extending our usability program and inviting partners to help us recruit participants that are representative of the customers they serve. We have to be mindful of data privacy and security concerns throughout the process so it’s not simple to execute, but it will ultimately lead to more effective activation strategies.
The onboarding journeys for all our products will be improved and we’ve already got some changes coming for Store onboarding flows. This will help shorten and simplify the number of steps needed to get a store up and running. We are also providing much better activation content to help customers learn the basics.
Connection
We have just shipped the first iteration of our Customers application, which brings together customer information and transaction information from our Store and Bookings Products. This will form the foundation for making other connections to workflows and processes that our customers use.
BaseKit has always been API-driven and this year we will be exposing more of our API to make it easier for partners and external vendors to customise and extend our products.
Value
ChatGPT will be making its first appearance in our Store application where it will help with product descriptions. We expect to find more places where machine learning and artificial intelligence can bring value to our products and services in the future.
We have already improved our stock image offering for 2023, with a better selection of images and unlimited image usage for all of our packages. Soon we’ll be adding video background capabilities to page template sections and later we may add video content options in other parts of the page too.
In the sitebuilder, we will add new site navigation options and more control over text layout and styling. A new ‘bio-site’ template section is planned that will make it easier for customers who want a simple ‘link-in-bio’ page.
For the store, we will be offering a logistics integration so that customers can print shipping labels for a wide range of couriers.
We’re on a mission for tech democracy for small business – are you in?
